Ali Cherri. Hauser & Wirth Menorca.
Contemporary art and sculpture photography by Daniel Schäfer documenting Tree of Life (2023), a work by Lebanese artist Ali Cherri, presented at Hauser & Wirth Menorca in spring 2026.
Installed in the gardens adjacent to Gallery 8 on Illa del Rei, the sculpture forms part of the outdoor sculpture trail selected by Cristina Iglesias, bringing together contemporary artworks in dialogue with the island's history, architecture and Mediterranean landscape.
Inspired by an ancient Mesopotamian relief depicting the Tree of Life from the reign of Sargon (24th–23rd century BCE), Cherri's bronze sculpture revisits a symbol found across different cultural and religious traditions, including the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Bible and the Quran.
The work reflects the artist's ongoing exploration of archaeology, cultural heritage and the afterlives of historical artefacts. Through references to damaged and displaced objects, Cherri examines the relationship between collective memory, cultural identity and the traces left by history.
Presented outdoors in Menorca, Tree of Life introduces ideas of survival, renewal and shared ancestral memory, establishing a connection between ancient mythology and the contemporary Mediterranean.
Commissioned by Hauser & Wirth, Daniel Schäfer Studio's photographic documentation captures the sculpture's material and symbolic presence within the gardens, exploring the relationship between artwork, landscape and architectural setting.
