U158 Bunker. Regina Hoefter & raumstation. Munich.
Architecture and interior photography by Daniel Schäfer Studio documenting U158, a former Second World War air-raid bunker in Munich’s Schwabing district, transformed into a residential building with an extraordinary penthouse designed by Regina Hoefter in collaboration with raumstation Architekten.
Originally built in 1943, the protected concrete structure was converted by raumstation Architekten for developer Euroboden, introducing loft apartments, a gallery and a new residential identity while preserving the monumental character of the original building.
Occupying the upper levels, the approximately 380-square-metre penthouse brings together expansive living spaces, a glazed rooftop pavilion and panoramic views over Munich. Its interior design by Regina Hoefter establishes a dialogue between the bunker’s exposed concrete, sculptural architectural elements, expressive furnishings and carefully composed materials.
The project contrasts the weight and permanence of the historic structure with the openness, light and contemporary character of its transformed interiors. Original concrete surfaces and structural openings remain visible, becoming integral elements of the residential experience.
Daniel Schäfer Studio’s photographic series explores these contrasts through architecture, interior composition, materiality and natural light, documenting the distinctive atmosphere of the penthouse and its relationship with the city.
The project was featured in Architectural Digest Germany, with photographs by Daniel Schäfer.
