The VAT-Duties Art Project.

The VAT-Duties Art Project is a photographic art series by Daniel Schäfer, developed in collaboration with KMLZ, a German law firm specialising in VAT and indirect taxation.

The project translates complex legal cases into visual narratives, connecting the abstract world of tax law with the people, places, industries and environments behind them.

Developed across 20 European cities, the series brings together architectural photography, landscapes, portraits and artistic interpretations. Each photographic work approaches a different case through its visual context, revealing unexpected connections between legal proceedings and the physical world.

Conceived as a commissioned artistic project rather than conventional corporate photography, the series allowed Daniel Schäfer to develop a distinctive photographic language across multiple disciplines. The works were subsequently produced as fine art prints, framed and presented as part of a permanent exhibition at KMLZ in Munich.

The project reflects the studio’s ability to transform complex subjects into coherent visual narratives, bringing together artistic authorship, research and commissioned photography.
