Hauser & Wirth / Menorca.
Since 2019, Daniel Schäfer Studio has been developing an ongoing photographic archive commissioned by Hauser & Wirth and Luis Laplace, documenting the evolution of the project on Illa del Rei and tracing the relationship between contemporary art, architecture, landscape and place.
Beginning during the transformation of Illa del Rei into a contemporary art destination, the photographic work followed the restoration and sensitive repurposing of the historic auxiliary buildings into Hauser & Wirth Menorca’s art center, a project led by Luis Laplace alongside the historic naval hospital conserved by Fundació Hospital de l’Illa del Rei and the gardens designed by Piet Oudolf.
Over the years, the work has accompanied the continuous development of the project across multiple dimensions, documenting architecture, Oudolf´s garden, artworks, public events, educational activities, the Cantina restaurant and the surrounding landscape. What began as documentation of a site in transformation gradually developed into a long-term visual archive recording the evolution of a cultural place over time.
The photographic work includes artworks by international artists such as Rashid Johnson, Christina Quarles, Eduardo Chillida, Joan Miró, Paul McCarthy, Roni Horn, Gary Simmons, Pipilotti Rist, Mark Bradford, Louise Bourgeois, Mika Rottenberg, Cindy Sherman, Martin Creed, Stefan Brüggemann and David Zink Yi, among many others presented throughout the years.
Beyond documenting individual spaces, the work developed by Daniel Schäfer Studio has formed a central part of the visual communication surrounding Hauser & Wirth Menorca since its inception. Images from the project have appeared across multiple international publications and media platforms, contributing to the broader visual narrative through which the project has been experienced and communicated over time.
Beyond the images themselves, this body of work has grown through years of collaboration, trust and shared conversations. We are deeply grateful to Iwan and Manuela Wirth, Luis Laplace, Mar Rescalvo, Marta Coll and María Mora for being part of this journey and for contributing, each in their own way, to the development of a project that continues to evolve over time.
