Munich Bungalow by Robert Stephan

Located in Munich’s Harlaching district, this 1970s bungalow was transformed by interior designer Robert Stephan into a family residence inspired by Californian modernism and American collectible design. Concealed behind an unassuming street-level entrance, the house unfolds across an elongated plan with two internal courtyards, expansive glazing and a continuous connection to the surrounding garden.

Originally renovated by architect Max Brunner, the building retains its distinctive architectural structure while introducing a warmer and more personal interior language. Working with Holzrausch, Stephan incorporated timber panelling, custom cabinetry and carefully selected materials, creating a dialogue between the building’s modernist character and the owners’ previous life in New York.

The interiors bring together an exceptional collection of twentieth-century and contemporary furniture. Custom bronze tables by Silas Seandel occupy the living room alongside Vladimir Kagan’s Free Form sofa, upholstered in fabric by Pierre Frey, and a reproduction of Jean Royère’s Ours Polaire sofa. A sculptural table by Vincenzo De Cotiis adds another dimension to the collection.

Elsewhere, pieces by George Nakashima, BDDW and Lindsey Adelman coexist with furniture by Carlos Motta and a sculptural giraffe by artist Benedetta Mori Ubaldini, represented by Rossana Orlandi. The selection reflects the owners’ interest in craftsmanship, collectible design and the relationship between furniture and art.

The garden, redesigned with landscape architect Alexander Koch, extends the living spaces outdoors through sheltered courtyards and terraces, reinforcing the connection between architecture and nature.

Photographed by Daniel Schäfer Studio and published in AD Germany, the editorial series documents the residence through architectural compositions, material details and the personal character of its interiors.
