Inside Hondalea by Cristina Iglesias.
On Santa Clara Island in San Sebastián, Hondalea by Cristina Iglesias transforms the former lighthouse into a space where sculpture, architecture and landscape become inseparable. Originally conceived as a permanent intervention within the island, the work introduces the experience of the sea into the interior of the structure itself, creating a space where geological forms, water and movement continuously reshape perception.
Known for a sculptural practice exploring the relationship between architecture, nature and spatial experience, Cristina Iglesias continuously investigates thresholds between interior and exterior, presence and absence, materiality and landscape. Across different bodies of work, her interventions often dissolve the boundaries between constructed space and natural systems, creating environments where perception unfolds through movement, light and physical encounter.
The photographic series developed by Daniel Schäfer Studio moves through the interior spaces of Hondalea, tracing the dialogue between sculptural surfaces, water, light and architectural fragments. Rather than simply documenting a site-specific intervention, the images construct a visual narrative positioned between editorial documentation and atmospheric interpretation, exploring the relationship between artistic practice, spatial perception and the changing conditions of the sea itself.
Within Hondalea, architecture operates as a container and becomes part of the work itself. Water enters the space as material, movement and sound, transforming the experience of the former lighthouse into a perceptual environment suspended between sculpture, landscape and contemplation.
