Fundación Montenmedio Contemporánea. Spain.
Fundación NMAC is a unique contemporary art institution located within the Dehesa de Montenmedio near Vejer de la Frontera, where site-specific artworks are embedded within a Mediterranean forest landscape. Conceived as a place where art and nature establish a continuous dialogue, the foundation brings together architecture, landscape interventions, installations and artistic practices that unfold through the experience of moving through the territory itself.
Commissioned for the foundation’s publication and visual documentation, Daniel Schäfer Studio developed an extensive photographic body of work tracing the relationship between artworks, landscape and atmosphere throughout the site. The work extended beyond the documentation of individual pieces, constructing a visual narrative capable of translating the experience of moving through NMAC: shifting light conditions, vegetation, spatial sequences and the relationship between artworks and their natural context.
Developed across the Mediterranean pine forest, exhibition spaces and surrounding landscapes, the photographic work also expanded beyond the foundation itself, including visual fragments of Vejer de la Frontera and the surrounding territory. What emerged through this process was not simply a documentary record, but an evolving visual archive exploring how contemporary art inhabits landscape and how place itself becomes part of the work.
The photographic work includes artworks and interventions by internationally recognised artists including Marina Abramović, James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson, Maurizio Cattelan, Cristina Lucas, Pilar Albarracín, Huang Yong Ping, Richard Nonas, Maja Bajevic, Michael Lin, Santiago Sierra, Shen Yuan, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Adel Abdessemed, Sol LeWitt, Jacobo Castellano and others presented throughout the years.
Beyond documenting individual works, the project sought to construct a broader visual language around the foundation and its relationship to landscape, atmosphere and territory, contributing to a long-term visual archive of a place where contemporary art and nature continuously reshape one another.
