Casa de Blas by Alberto Campo Baeza. Madrid.
Designed by Alberto Campo Baeza for cultural manager and art collector Francisco de Blas, Casa de Blas stands on a hill in Sevilla la Nueva, near Madrid. The house is conceived as a composition of two contrasting architectural volumes: a solid concrete base embedded in the landscape and a transparent glass pavilion opening towards the surrounding mountains.
The architecture establishes a dialogue between enclosure and openness, shelter and contemplation. Below, precisely positioned windows frame distant views; above, the glass pavilion becomes an elevated observatory where light, geometry and landscape define the experience of space.
Inside, Francisco de Blas has assembled a personal collection of twentieth-century furniture and contemporary art. The living room brings together Isamu Noguchi’s Coffee Table for Vitra, the Eames Plywood Chair and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona daybed for Knoll. In the dining room and library, original designs by Alvar Aalto for Artek include the Chair 46, Table 91 and Armchair 402. His celebrated Paimio Chair occupies a place in the upper pavilion.
Furniture by Poul Kjærholm further complements the architectural composition, including the PK25 chair, PK21 stool and PK80 daybed. These pieces introduce a refined dialogue between industrial materials, craftsmanship and the house’s restrained geometry.
The art collection adds another dimension to the interiors. A mural by Carlos Maciá shares the living space with geometric abstractions by Susana Lacarra and a photograph by Thomas Neuman. Elsewhere, works by Pierre Mabille, Erwin Olaf and sculptor Martín Chirino introduce different artistic languages into the domestic environment.
Photographed by Daniel Schäfer Studio and published in Architectural Digest Spain, the editorial series documents the relationship between architecture, contemporary art, design and landscape, moving between the building’s geometric composition and the intimate character of its inhabited spaces.
